Running several funded accounts: limits, copy trading and risk

A wall of six monitors showing the same chart, linked by gold lines to one keyboard
Key takeaways
  • Most futures firms let you hold several funded accounts at once, usually up to 5, and many let you copy trades between your own accounts.
  • Copying the same trade into 5 accounts doesn’t spread risk. It’s one trade at five times the size: a bad day can end every account together.
  • Copying other people’s trades, or taking opposite sides across accounts, is banned almost everywhere.

Once a trader gets one payout, the next idea is obvious: run five accounts and multiply it. Firms allow it, within limits, and copy-trading tools make it easy. This guide covers each firm’s limits from its own help centre, the risk most traders miss, and a calculator to size it sensibly.

Account limits by firm

FirmHow many at onceCopy trading
Topstep5 active Express Funded Accounts. 1 Live Funded AccountAllowed across your Express Funded Accounts, up to $750K of buying power. Topstep can refuse multiple funded accounts for any reason
TradeifyUp to 5 funded accounts per householdOnly between accounts you own and manage
MyFundedFuturesUp to 10 evaluations. Up to 5 sim-funded accounts on 25K/50K plans, or 3 if you hold any 100K/150K. Some plans have lower caps (Rapid EOD 50K: 3; Builder 50K: 1)Allowed across all account types, including Tradovate’s group trading
Lucid TradingUp to 10 accounts in total per household, evaluations and funded combinedSee Lucid’s rules for your plan
PurdiaSee Purdia’s plan rulesAllowed across up to 3 accounts
FTMOTotal allocation capped at $400,000 per trader or strategy, across all accountsIdentical trading from the same outside source (signals, copy services) over the cap can lead to suspension
“Per household” matters. Tradeify and Lucid count accounts per household, not per person. Two traders at the same address share one limit.

The risk: five accounts, one trade

When a trade copier sends the same order to five accounts, every account takes the same loss at the same moment. Here is a $200 losing trade copied into five $50K accounts, each with a $2,000 drawdown:

Five accounts each lose $200 on the same copied trade, a combined $1,000. After 10 losing trades in a row, all five accounts reach their floor on the same day. One copied losing trade Acct 1−$200 Acct 2−$200 Acct 3−$200 Acct 4−$200 Acct 5−$200 Combined −$1,000 10 losers in a row ends all five accounts on the same day
Five accounts don’t give you five chances. With a copier, they give you one chance at five times the cost.

That’s the trade-off. Copying multiplies payouts when the strategy works and multiplies fees and resets when it doesn’t. Diversification only happens if the accounts trade differently. Even then, taking opposite positions across accounts counts as hedging, which Topstep and Tradeify both ban.

The rules that catch multi-account traders

  • Hedging across accounts: Tradeify bans opposing positions on the same or a correlated product across accounts, and can put every account involved into violation.
  • Trading with others: Topstep bans trading similarly in partnership with other people. MyFundedFutures bans collaborating on identical or opposite strategies across unconnected accounts.
  • Signal and copy services: FTMO says identical trading from the same third-party source across accounts can lead to suspension above its allocation cap.
  • Account stacking: Topstep bans blowing one account aggressively and moving straight on to the next.

Multi-account calculator

Work out what copying across several accounts really puts at risk, and what it costs to set up.

Real risk per trade$1,0005 × $200, all at once
Losers before all fail10in a row, every account together
Cost to set up$8255 × $165
Total drawdown at stake$10,0005 × $2,000

Risking $200 per trade is 10% of each account’s room. Copied across 5 accounts, a losing streak costs all of them at once.

A sensible way to scale up

  1. Get one payout first. Prove the strategy on one funded account before buying more.
  2. Add accounts one or two at a time, and only from profit, so a bad week doesn’t cost money you needed.
  3. Size each account as if it were your only one. Then remember the combined figure is what you can lose today.
  4. Use one direction across all accounts. Never long in one and short in another.
  5. Check the household rule if anyone else at your address trades with the same firm.

Before scaling, check what fees each new account adds in what it costs after you pass.
